Gel Polish vs Regular Nail Paint: Which One Should You Buy?

Quick answer

Pick gel polish if you want a glossy finish that lasts 2 to 3 weeks without chipping. Pick regular nail paint if you like changing colours every few days and want zero setup. Gel needs a UV/LED lamp, a base coat and a top coat. Regular paint needs nothing but the bottle.

It's the first question almost every customer asks at our counter. Both look pretty on day one. The difference shows up on day five, when one is still shining and the other has chipped at the tips.

Here's a simple breakdown so you can pick what suits your routine and budget.

What is gel polish?

Gel polish looks like nail paint in the bottle, but it doesn't dry in the air. It hardens (we call it curing) under a UV or LED lamp in 30 to 60 seconds per coat. Once cured, it's hard, glossy and tough to chip.

A gel manicure has three layers: a base coat that grips the nail, two thin layers of colour, and a top coat for shine and protection. Each layer goes under the lamp.

What is regular nail paint?

Regular nail paint (also called nail lacquer) dries on its own as the solvent evaporates. Two coats, a few minutes of waiting, and you're done. It's easy, cheap and quick to remove with any nail paint remover.

The catch: it's softer, so it chips faster, especially if you cook, clean or type a lot. Most people see chips within 3 to 5 days.

What does it cost to start with gel?

The lamp is a one-time buy. After that, each bottle of gel lasts many manicures because you use thin coats.

Most home users start for ₹3,000 to ₹4,500. Salons usually pick a bigger lamp and a full shade kit.

How do you remove gel safely?

Never peel or pick at gel. It pulls off the top layer of your natural nail with it.

  1. Lightly buff the shiny top coat with a buffer so the remover can get in.
  2. Apply gel remover with cotton, or use a quick-acting remover like Magic Remover.
  3. Wait the time on the label, then gently push the softened gel off with a cuticle pusher.
  4. Finish with a drop of cuticle oil.

The Gel Nail Removal Kit with Magic Remover has everything in one box.

So, which one should you buy?

  • Buy gel if you want nails that stay perfect through a wedding week, a trip or a busy month, or if you do nails for clients.
  • Stick to regular paint if you change colours often, rarely do your nails, or don't want to buy a lamp yet.

Many of our customers keep both: gel for big occasions, regular paint for weekends. Not sure which shades to start with? Send us a message on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a few.

Frequently asked questions

Is gel polish bad for your nails?

Gel itself doesn't damage nails. Damage usually comes from peeling it off or over-filing. Remove it properly with a gel remover and use cuticle oil, and your nails stay healthy.

Can I apply gel polish without a lamp?

No. Gel polish only hardens under UV or LED light. Without a lamp it stays sticky. If you don't want a lamp, look at no-lamp top coats or regular nail paint.

How long does a bottle of gel polish last?

A 15ml bottle covers many full manicures because you apply thin coats. Keep the cap tight and the bottle away from sunlight so it doesn't thicken.

Can I put regular nail paint over gel?

Yes. You can paint regular nail paint on top of cured gel and wipe it off with normal remover later. The gel underneath stays put.
