How to Apply Cat Eye Gel Polish (and Use the Magnet Right)

By Team Choice6 Oct 20266 min read
Quick answer

Apply a thin coat of cat eye gel, hold the magnet close to the nail for 5 to 10 seconds until the line forms, then cure straight away. Work one nail at a time. A black or dark base makes the shimmer pop.

Cat eye nails are everywhere right now, and for good reason. That glowing line that moves with the light looks like magic.

The magic is tiny metal particles inside the gel. A magnet pulls them into a line, and the lamp locks them in place. Here's how to get it right.

Step by step

  1. Prep the nail. Push back cuticles, shape, lightly buff and wipe with a dehydrator so the gel grips.
  2. Base coat. Apply a thin layer and cure.
  3. Dark colour (optional). One coat of black or a deep shade and cure. This makes the cat eye effect much stronger.
  4. Shake the cat eye bottle well. The metal particles settle at the bottom.
  5. Apply a thin coat of cat eye gel on one nail.
  6. Hold the magnet. Bring it close to the nail without touching, for 5 to 10 seconds. Watch the line form.
  7. Cure immediately. If you wait, the particles drift and the line goes blurry.
  8. Repeat for a second coat on each nail for a deeper effect.
  9. Top coat and cure. Wipe off the sticky layer if your top coat has one.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

  • Line is blurry: you waited too long before curing. Cure within a few seconds of removing the magnet.
  • Effect is faint: coat is too thick or the bottle wasn't shaken. Shake for 20 seconds and apply thinner coats.
  • Gel touched the magnet: hold the magnet slightly higher. Clean it with alcohol before the next nail.
  • Line is in the wrong place: move the magnet before curing. The particles follow it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a black base for cat eye gel?

No, but a black or dark base makes the shimmer look much deeper and brighter. On a light base, the effect looks softer.

How long should I hold the magnet?

5 to 10 seconds is usually enough. Hold it close to the nail without touching, then cure right away.

Can I use any magnet for cat eye polish?

It needs to be a strong magnet. Nail magnets are made for this and come in shapes that create different patterns.
