Soak your feet for 10 minutes, pat them dry, then file the rough areas gently in one direction for a minute or two. Use a coarse side for thick skin and a fine side to smooth. Rinse, dry and moisturise. Do it once a week, not every day.
Dry, cracked heels are common in our weather, especially if you walk a lot in sandals. A good foot file and a few minutes a week make a big difference.
Types of foot files
| Type | Feels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Emery foot file | Like fine sandpaper | Regular care, light roughness |
| Laser or steel file | Tiny sharp holes, stronger | Thick, hard skin on heels |
| Two-sided file | Coarse on one side, fine on the other | Doing both steps with one tool |

How to use a foot file, step by step
- Soak your feet in warm water for about 10 minutes to soften the skin.
- Pat dry with a towel.
- Start with the coarse side. File the rough areas gently, in one direction, for a minute or two.
- Switch to the fine side to smooth the area.
- Rinse and dry.
- Moisturise with a thick foot cream and wear cotton socks overnight if you can.
Mistakes to avoid
- Filing too hard or too often. Your skin builds back thicker. Once a week is enough.
- Filing until it hurts. Stop when the skin feels smooth, not raw.
- Sharing files. Keep your own file, and clean it after every use.
- Skipping moisturiser. Filing without moisturising brings the cracks back fast.
If you have diabetes, poor circulation or very deep, painful cracks, check with your doctor before using a foot file.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use a foot file on wet or dry feet?
Soften the skin first by soaking, then pat dry before filing. Filing soaking-wet skin can remove too much and leave it sore.
How often should I use a foot file?
Once a week is enough for most people. Filing too often can make the skin thicker over time.
Which foot file is best for cracked heels?
Start with a two-sided file: the coarse side for hard skin and the fine side to smooth. Always moisturise afterwards.
